Advanced LEVEL LEARNERS- Identified gifted students as well as advanced level math learners will have the opportunity to complete advanced critical thinking problems as well as extensions in each math project.
Gorzycki MS offers four math courses for 6th graders; regular Math, Pre-AP Math, Accelerated Math (Algebra track) (6th and 7th grade in one year), and there is an additional option that will take up two class periods in 6th grade so your child can take Algebra in 7th grade and Geometry in 8th grade. With this last option your child will lose one elective. Pre-AP Math is based on a rigorous 6th grade curriculum, and Accelerated Math is also rigorous and masters all 6th and 7th grade curriculum in one year. In order to take Accelerated Math a student must do well on the 5th Grade STAAR Exam, have an "A" average in math, and do well on benchmarks.
Each math project has well thought out extensions and challenges to extend learning for Advanced Level Learners. Advanced Level Learners are responsible for completing part of all of these extensions. Each homework packet also contains challenging word problems that incorporated higher level thinking skills that are required for Advanced Level Learners.
Another resource for the math lovers in the class is Problem Solving Genius. I call these Einstein Packets in class. There include extremely rigorous chapters that explain a math strategy. Then the math strategy is applied word problems that get progressively more difficult.
TECHNOLOGY- Students will use technology in class on a regular basis. If a student does not have access to the necessary technology at home or after school, students can arrange to use technology in my classroom. Students will also go to a technology station at least 3 times each week for 20 minutes. If a students falls behind on a project, it is the student's responsibility to communicate this with Mrs. Laird. We will collaborate to come up with a plan to ensure that the student is able to catch up. I am usually at school by 7:15am, and students are welcome to work on math before school in my classroom.
